DESCRIPTION

The HP P4300 and P4500 G2 SAS SAN Solutions and Storage Systems are entering the End of Life (EOL) period.

In December 2012, HP Storage introduced the third generation of HP StoreVirtual models built on the HP ProLiant Gen8 Server technology and powered by HP LeftHand OS - HP StoreVirtual 4000 Storage. These systems offer higher capacity and performance at a lower data center footprint and optional Fibre Channel connectivity. The HP StoreVirtual 4000 Storage models expand the product offering and will replace all HP P4000 G2 products. This notification applies only to the HP P4300 G2 and HP P4500 G2 SAS SAN Solutions and Storage systems. Details regarding EOL timelines for other HP P4000 G2 Storage products will be delivered in subsequent communications.

New HP StoreVirtual 4000 models run the same proven software platform, HP LeftHand OS 10.5, which allows interoperability with existing HP P4000 G2 storage installations. HP StoreVirtual 4000 models, which use the same disk technology and number of drives, can be mixed with HP P4000 G2 storage systems in the same HP StoreVirtual cluster. In other cases, the new HP StoreVirtual 4000 models should be deployed in new clusters, and data can be moved online to new clusters using HP Peer Motion.

The following table summarizes the EOL period milestones for the HP P4300 G2 and HP P4500 G2 products:

Milestone

Hardware support with an Active* version of HP LeftHand OS software is available until this date
* An Active version is formally released, active, and running within HP Storage engineering labs for sustainment purposesand is tested with solutions that are going through test and qualification. More than one version of software can be consideredActive at any time.
Customers running Active versions of software will receive all warranty, support, and elevation capabilities, based on their existing warranty and/or contract terms and conditions, and service level entitlements. For newly discovered and undocumented issues, cases can be elevated to HP Storage engineering. Because Active software is still available to our engineering labs, once the lab receives the elevation they will attempt to diagnose the issue and work toward developing and delivering a solution.

DETAILS

HP LeftHand OS

HP recommends upgrading to the latest HP LeftHand OS version to make use of the latest features and enhancements. HP LeftHand OS versions released after 30 April 2015 will no longer support the HP P4300 G2 and P4500 G2 Storage products. At least one version of HP LeftHand OS supporting the HP P4000 G2 Storage systems will remain active and critical defect fixes, in the form of patches, will continue through the end of HP engineering support.

Interoperability support

Interoperability support of HP P4300 G2 and P4500 G2 Storage systems with host operating systems and iSCSI host bus adapters is maintained in the HP StoreVirtual 4000 Storage Compatibility Matrix, found at https://www.hpe.com/storage/spock (HPE Passport required for access).

Availability of hardware upgrades

HP P4000 G2 10G BASE-SFP+ Upgrade Kits for applicable HP P4000 G2 SAS Storage systems are orderable until 30 April 2015.

HP service and support

HP Storage will offer engineering support for HP P4300 G2 and P4500 G2 Storage systems with active HP LeftHand OS software until 31 October 2018. HP recommends that all storage systems be kept under an active service contract.

Replacement or expansion of HP P4000 G2 installations

The HP StoreVirtual 4000 product line offers direct replacement and expansion options for some, but not all P4000 G2 models. The following tables outline the available options for direct replacement or expansion within the same cluster. For HP P4000 G2 models not listed below, there is no direct replacement. If no direct replacement is available, HP recommends creating a new cluster and using HP Peer Motion to migrate volumes or swap clusters online as appropriate.

Finding Serial Numbers for Support. I recently took over a postion where now I need to renew the support for our 3 Lefthand P4300 Nodes. The problem is. Getting the serial number for your 3PAR is one of those regular things you will need to do when you call HPE. What you will find with the 3PAR is that it has 2 serial numbers. A 3PAR and HPE Serial number. In those cases, each node will have a label with its individual serial number, but will also have a separate label with the “Bundle Serial Number”.
